Christmas Gifts to Coax Any Writer Out of the “Box”

Question for you: have you done your shopping for Christmas gifts yet? We all want to find the perfect Christmas gifts for those special people in our lives. We want it to be meaningful, functional, and inspiring. As a creative, I would venture to say that it is sometimes hardest to buy gifts for fellow artists. We want something that is unique and also meaningful.

Fear not. I have numerous functional yet meaningful gift ideas for you this year. As it so happens, the messaging that goes with each gift is near and dear to my heart. I’ll now explain the meaning behind the merchandise design that is fondly known as “What Box?”

Nobody Puts Baby in the Corner (Or in a Box, If You Will)

Have you ever put yourself in a box? When you’re a creative surrounded by people and situations that, well, maybe aren’t so creative, the temptation to try and adjust so that you fit better within the expectations of others is strong.

But it’s like Martha Graham famously said: “You are unique, and if that is not fulfilled, then something has been lost.”

The idea of allowing ourselves to be confined by boxes that make sense to other people or ensure they are comfortable stifles so much of our lives: our creativity, our authenticity, and, ultimately, what we have to contribute to the world.

It just so happened that the view of Shea Quinn of the amazing Grow With Shea Podcast completely aligned with my own feelings about this whole “box” thing. (Shea is absolutely incredible and so is her podcast. Follow her here on Instagram). The idea of “boxes” opened up an amazing conversation and a great opportunity to collaborate together as we created our design. As you can see, three sides of the box are intact while the top portion is missing. The words “What Box?” are sneaking out, a representation of what it can feel like when we completely remove the need to limit and edit ourselves. It’s time to be the authentic creators God made us to be.

What Box have you been tempted to fit into?

Uniquely Inspired

The following verse is one that blew my mind when I first read it. It serves as such a beautiful reminder that artistic work is a calling and created by the Great Artist Himself:

“…and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills to make artistic designs for work…”
~Exodus 31:3-4

Without further ado, lets take a look at these message-bearing Christmas gifts we have available for the creatives in your life.
